How it works

SVG to ICO in 3 steps

  1. 1. Upload

    Drop an SVG on the box above, or click the box to choose a file. It opens in your browser and isn't uploaded.

  2. 2. Check the sizes

    See your icon at 16, 32 and 48 pixels, and choose a transparent or solid background.

  3. 3. Download

    Download favicon.ico, or the favicon pack with PNG icons and the HTML to paste into your site.

A real multi-size ICO

The converter draws your SVG three times, at 16, 32 and 48 pixels, and packs the three icons into one favicon.ico. Each size is drawn straight from the vector shapes, not shrunk from a big picture, so thin lines stay as crisp as a 16-pixel icon allows. Browsers pick the size they need, such as 16 or 32 pixels for a tab.

It all happens in your browser. Your SVG isn't sent to VectorArt.ai or anywhere else, and there's no account, watermark or file limit.

Add the favicon to your site

Download the favicon pack, unzip it and put the files in the root folder of your site, next to your home page. Then paste these tags into the <head> of your pages, and fill in your site's name in site.webmanifest.

Link tags

<link rel="icon" href="/favicon.ico" sizes="16x16 32x32 48x48">
<link rel="icon" href="/favicon-32.png" type="image/png" sizes="32x32">
<link rel="apple-touch-icon" href="/apple-touch-icon.png" sizes="180x180">
<link rel="manifest" href="/site.webmanifest">

Browsers also look for /favicon.ico on their own, so even without the tags the ICO in the root folder shows up in tabs.

Getting a good small icon

At 16 pixels only bold shapes survive. A simple mark, a letter or the symbol from your logo works better than the full logo with its name. A square SVG fills the icon; a wide one is centered with empty space above and below.

Only have the logo as a PNG? Convert it with the PNG to SVG converter first. If it sits on a white box, take that out with the SVG background remover so the favicon is see-through.

Questions

What sizes are in the ICO file?

16, 32 and 48 pixels square, each with full transparency. Those are the usual favicon sizes. The favicon pack adds PNGs at 32, 180, 192 and 512 pixels for phones and installed web apps.

Can I use this to make a favicon from an SVG?

Yes. Download favicon.ico for the classic favicon, or the favicon pack for a full set: favicon.ico, favicon-32.png, apple-touch-icon.png, icon-192.png, icon-512.png and site.webmanifest, plus the link tags above.

Why does the Apple touch icon have a background?

iPhones and iPads fill the transparent parts of a home screen icon with black. The 180 px apple-touch-icon.png always gets the background color you pick, white unless you change it.

Is my SVG uploaded?

No. Your browser reads the file, draws the icons and builds the ICO and the zip itself. Nothing is sent to a server.
