How the icon generator works

  1. You describe the icon. The Icon style, which this page picks for you, adds its own instructions to your words: one centered object with a black outline, in black and white, flat and simple, on a white background.
  2. An AI image model draws the picture.
  3. The picture is traced into an SVG. Each shape becomes a vector path, and the plain white background is dropped, so the icon sits on a transparent background.
  4. The result appears above the prompt. Press Edit image to recolor or clean it up in the SVG editor, or Download SVG to save the file.

If you leave the style on Simple and your prompt contains the word icon, the generator switches to the Icon style on its own.

Black and white or in color

The Icon style asks for black and white. For a full-color icon, pick the Simple style and name the colors, as in “flat red apple with one green leaf, two colors”. Leave out the word icon there, because it switches the style back to Icon. Another way is to make the icon in black and give it your colors afterwards in the SVG color editor.

Writing icon prompts

  • Ask for one object. A padlock still reads when the icon is small; “online security” makes the model invent a scene.
  • Name the line and shape you want: thick outline, thin lines, rounded corners, filled or outlined.
  • For a set, keep every word the same except the object: “padlock icon, thick outline”, “key icon, thick outline”, “shield icon, thick outline”. Make them one at a time and compare them side by side.
  • Don't ask for a transparent background. The generator removes the word transparent from prompts, and the white background it asks for is dropped when the icon is traced.

The 2,436 prompts in the library that use the word icon lean the same way: about a third of them say simple (32%), minimal or minimalist (31%), flat (30%) or white background (30%), and 41% name a color.

Using your icons

An SVG icon stays sharp at any size, so one file covers a button on a website and a printed sign. To make the file smaller for the web, run it through the SVG optimizer. If an app only takes PNG, the SVG to PNG converter makes one with a transparent background.

Creating needs a free VectorArt account. A free account comes with a small weekly allowance, one or two images a week depending on your country, shared with the image to SVG converters and the background remover. Paid plans raise the limit; the pricing page has the details.
